EventsI went to watch the 50th Japan Grand Sumo Tournament
On Sunday, February 8, we attended the "Japan Grand Sumo Tournament" at Ryogoku Kokugikan.
The weather that day was severe enough for snow to accumulate even in Tokyo, and while some students arrived late, the venue was filled with an atmosphere of excitement that was a stark contrast to the cold outside, and we enjoyed watching the sumo matches in that lively setting.
The students gazed intently at the unique atmosphere of the dohyo and the powerful matches between the massive wrestlers, and it seemed they were gradually drawn into the charm of sumo.
They also appeared surprised yet delighted by the shouts of the wrestlers’ names coming from the stands before each match, as well as the “Yoisho!” chants when the yokozuna performed his shiko.
It was a fulfilling day where we were able to experience the long tradition of Grand Sumo firsthand and gain insight into the depth of Japanese culture.
