About Japanese University Entrance Exams

Most undergraduate programs, graduate schools, and vocational schools in Japan conduct special admissions for international students in addition to the general admissions process for Japanese applicants.

Contents of the Special Selection Process

The special selection process for international students consists of the following elements. Schools combine several of these to conduct their entrance examinations.

  • Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)
  • Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)
  • TOEFL, etc.
  • Written Exam and Short Essay (Japanese)
  • Interview
  • Document screening (statement of purpose, etc.)

Preparation Classes for the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)

For undergraduate university entrance exams, many national and public universities require applicants to take the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU). Nearly half of private universities also require EJU scores. Not taking the EJU significantly limits your school choices, so be sure to take it. The EJU is administered twice a year, in June and November.

Content of the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)

The Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) requires applicants to select and take the subjects designated by their desired university or institution from the following list.

  • Japanese (including "writing") 125 minutes / 450 points
  • Science/Physics, Chemistry, Biology (select 2 subjects) 80 minutes / 200 points
  • Comprehensive Subjects: 80 minutes / 200 points
  • Mathematics/Course 1 (for Liberal Arts) or Course 2 (for Science) 80 minutes / 200 points

English exam preparation

For faculties and departments requiring English proficiency for admission, some universities create and administer their own English examinations, while others require submission of scores from the following English tests. Our school offers an "English" course to cultivate foundational English skills and applied abilities.

TOEFL・TOEIC・IELTS

When requiring English proficiency tests, many national university corporations request submission of test scores such as TOEFL.

Interview Preparation

At our school, homeroom teachers conduct interview practice after school. Subsequently, other faculty members conduct mock interviews for interested students, guiding them to approach the entrance exams with confidence.

Graduate School Entrance Exam Preparation

Guidance to assist with graduate school entrance exam preparation—such as determining research topics and drafting research proposals—will be provided during the required exam preparation classes.
Following this, individual guidance will be provided on each student's proposal and interview content.

Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)

Most students take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) each year to pursue higher education or employment in Japan. While the test format changed in 2010 and questions are no longer published, basic Japanese skills continue to be developed through daily classes. Once students enter intermediate-level classes, they can take test preparation classes during the afternoon elective required courses.

Opening of JLPT Preparation Classes

By understanding the grammar and vocabulary expressions at each level and repeatedly solving practice problems to become familiar with the question formats, you will aim for your target score.
